What songs can we write?
What songs can we write,
When streets are quite bare?

Times Square has no fright
And strangeness becomes rare.

It will become such a bore
When most people we meet
Are checking out at a store
Toting shopping bags so neat.
The gritty Lower East Side,
I tell you, my good friend,
Will resemble a Disney ride?

Postcards they will send.
Dear Mom, You will never believe,
I’m standing on a New York street.

Old-time New Yorkers will oddly grieve
Manhattan’s depiction of a city so sweet.
